EBSCO Partners with NC LIVE to Support Next Generation of Nurses

NC LIVE Provides North Carolina Nursing Students with Critical Resources

IPSWICH, Mass. and Raleigh, N.C. — Jan. 10, 2017 — The number of Americans ages 65 and older is projected to more than double from 46 million today to over 98 million by 2060, and the 65-and-older age group’s share of the total population will rise to nearly 24 percent from 15 percent. An influx of well-trained nurses will be required to meet the healthcare needs of this growing population. To support the training of these nurses, NC LIVE has partnered with EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) to provide all North Carolina nursing programs access to CINAHL, the premier nursing and allied health database.

“Our partnership with EBSCO is an example of how NC LIVE is supporting the needs of North Carolinians by leveraging our cooperative purchasing power,” said Rob Ross, Executive Director of NC LIVE.  “By negotiating on behalf of 205 libraries across the state, we have maximized our spending power and secured a resource that helps address a real-life challenge. When you visit the doctor, you want to know that the people helping you have received the best training and education. Ensuring that nursing students in our state have access to premium educational resources is NC LIVE’s way of supporting the next generation of nurses.”

While CINAHL offers a significant benefit to North Carolina’s nursing and allied health communities, NC LIVE will also provide EBSCO resources that serve the general public. One such resource is NoveList, a database that recommends books to readers based on their personal interests and reading style. A longtime favorite of librarians and avid readers, NoveList was founded locally in Kernersville, NC. Tanya Jones, Collection Development Supervisor at Gaston County Public Library, explains the value of NoveList: "Readers often know just what they want to read; that's easy. They search for their favorite author or character. But sometimes, a reader wants to discover something new, something that will surprise and engage them.” NoveList goes beyond the search-by-similar-author approach, using appeal factors such as “issue-oriented storyline,” “feel-good tone,” “brooding character,” and “witty writing style” to help users discover new and unexpected titles they will enjoy.

In total, NC LIVE will provide access to five EBSCO resources, which any North Carolina resident with a library card can access online:

  • CINAHL®: The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature is the premier database covering topics such as nursing, biomedicine, health sciences librarianship, alternative/complementary medicine, consumer health and 17 allied health disciplines.
  • NoveList®: A readers’ advisory resource that recommends books to readers based on their personal interests, reading style, and associated appeal factors. NoveList features read-alike and listen-alike recommendations, series information, award winning titles, and a new on-the-shelf feature that lets patrons know what titles are in their public library.
  • Consumer Reports: This popular resource provides unbiased product ratings and reviews to help consumers make smart purchasing decisions. Consumer Reports is made available along with an extensive list of popular magazines and scholarly journals via MasterFILE Premier.
  • Biography Reference Center: This resource provides more than 430,000 full-text biographies on people of interest.
  • AutoMate: This online resource provides accurate, up-to-date repair information for thousands of domestic and imported vehicles.

EBSCO Information Services’ Senior Vice President of APK Product Management, Mike Laddin says that, with this new partnership, patrons in North Carolina can look forward to an enhanced research experience and a wealth of resources covering a variety of topics. “NC LIVE has worked tirelessly for nearly 20 years to provide North Carolinians with online access to high-quality information resources. These offerings will support education, improve literacy, and help consumers make smarter purchasing decisions. We are delighted to be partnering with NC LIVE to make a difference in North Carolina.”
