Session 1: Lemons Into Lemonade: Developing Effective & Meaningful One-Shot Instruction

The traditional “one-shot” approach to library instruction is not the ideal scenario for learning. One-shots can be disconnected from the rest of the curriculum, place high demands on librarian labor, and at worst, confuse students further. Problematic as they may be, one-shots are a highly requested, standard practice for instruction librarians.

How can we make the most of it so students get the most out of it?

In this session, attendees will learn how to turn the single classroom interaction into something well-integrated and useful by applying principles such as backward design, reflective practice, inclusive pedagogy, and active learning. This presentation will also share tips and strategies for moving beyond the one-shot to improve student learning. Participants will apply what they’ve learned by collaborating on solutions to common instruction requests through scenario-based learning.

Whether you're new to playful pedagogy or looking to refresh your approach, you'll leave with creative strategies, practical examples, and inspiration to make your lessons both impactful and unforgettable.

TESTIMONIALS

"This was time well spent! There was a lot of information packed in to a short amount of time. I have paid for leadership workshops that were less useful than this free one!"

"The presenters were very relaxed and approachable which created the feeling of a shared learning experience rather than a simple lecture designed to disseminate facts."

"Meeting NC LIVE staff and librarians on the various advisory councils makes me feel more comfortable about reaching out with feedback concerning future resources."

"I felt that the meeting was very productive. The subject-based handout was particularly helpful."

"Having the regional meetings was a great idea. Travel budgets are limited so it was nice to be able to take a day trip for professional development, refresh and meet the new NC LIVE staff! Please keep offering these regional meetings!!"
