Raleigh, NC – NC LIVE is proud to announce the addition of the Indigenous Peoples of North America, Part I digital archive from Gale, part of Cengage Group. This permanent collection, made possible through funding from an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant, offers a comprehensive view of the history, cultures, and experiences of Indigenous peoples across North America and Canada.
Gale’s Indigenous Peoples of North America collection was selected by NC LIVE’s Resource Advisory Committee for its wealth of primary source materials on the history of American Indian tribes and supporting organizations. These materials cover a broad range of topics, from the seventeenth to twentieth century, including early encounters with settlers to contemporary issues faced by Indigenous communities.
“This collection is a much-needed addition to our offerings, providing researchers, students, and lifelong learners with insights into Indigenous histories and cultures,” said Claire Leverett, Interim Executive Director of NC LIVE. “With the addition of this resource, our collections will better reflect the history and culture of our state.”
“I am thrilled that this important resource will now be available in perpetuity through NC LIVE,” said Michelle Underhill, State Librarian for North Carolina. “By having this available through NC LIVE, residents throughout North Carolina have access to it through their public and academic libraries. Libraries of all types remain important community hubs for obtaining access to historical and current research materials, for learning information and digital skills helpful in accessing, analyzing, and interpreting these materials, and so much more.”
“Indigenous Peoples of North America is particularly significant for North Carolina, given the state's rich Indigenous history,” said Paul Gazzolo, senior vice president and general manager at Gale. “By adding this collection, NC LIVE is providing a powerful tool not only for local tribes to explore their own histories, but also for all North Carolinians to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the state’s indigenous heritage. This collection will undoubtedly serve as a bridge between past and present, supporting education, research and cultural preservation efforts across the state. We are proud to partner with NC LIVE to make these primary source materials accessible to its communities.”
The addition of Gale’s Indigenous Peoples of North America collection to NC LIVE is part of the consortium’s ongoing effort to expand access to high-quality educational resources to users across the state. All North Carolinians can access the collection through NC LIVE’s website or by visiting their local library.
This project/program/service is made possible by funding from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) as administered by the State Library of North Carolina, a division of the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (IMLS grant number LS-256834-OLS-24).
