Current Funding
NC LIVE is funded both by recurring state legislative funds via the budgets of the UNC System, the NC Community College System, and the State Library of NC, as well as via the private contributions of the NC Independent Colleges and Universities. Since NC LIVE's inception in 1997, this funding has risen only 34% (from $3.2m to $4.3m), in which time the price of e-resources has risen 517%. This has led to painful cuts to the e-resources NC LIVE provides and has prevented NC LIVE from licensing new e-resources that would support the emerging needs of North Carolinians.
FUNDING REQUEST
NC LIVE is requesting an additional $5 million in recurring state funds to buy resources for:
- Nursing and healthcare programs
- Workforce development and college readiness
- Consumer health information
- Digital skills and digital literacy support
- Training on emerging technologies
Why support NC LIVE?
NC LIVE builds on North Carolina’s investment in broadband by providing high quality, educational content to all communities. NC LIVE has not had a funding increase in 20 years. In that time, the price of online resources has increased 237%. If funding does not increase, NC LIVE will be forced to cancel content subscriptions, affecting accreditation and support of libraries, students, and learners across the state.
Why buy through NC LIVE?
NC LIVE saved North Carolina $47.8 million in 2023 by negotiating 80-90% off list prices for resources. These resources were used 10.3 million times across all institutions in the same year.
Students at small, rural institutions have access to the same resources as students at large research institutions. For many small institutions, NC LIVE provides the only online educational resources available to their communities. were
